We are living through a time of great
shaking: "At that time his voice shook the earth, but now
he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but
also the heavens." (Heb 12:26).
This shaking from God has rocked the
Christian world. The world's media has been replete with stories of
sin in the church. Part of the Catholic Church in the States looks
like going into bankruptcy as a result of legal costs. Similarly the
Anglican church in Canada has been pretty well bankrupted. Sin in
the church has been shaken out into the limelight and we
are ashamed because so much of the church (especially in
the West) has failed to adequately represent Jesus to our
However there are things we can do
about this as individuals. There are positive and constructive
ways for us to respond...
Being a Christian leader is one of the
most difficult jobs in the world. In
his book Prayer Shield, Peter Wagner offers five reasons
pastors and other Christian leaders are in great need of
watchmen interceding for them:
Pastors have more Responsibility and Accountability
James 3:1, "My brethren, let not many of you become
teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment."
Pastors Are More Subject to Temptation
Make no mistake about it, the higher up you go on the ladder of
Christian leadership, the higher you go on Satan's hit list.
Pastors Are More Targeted by Spiritual Warfare
It has now become known that over the last several years
satanists, witches, New Ager's, occult practitioners, shamans,
spiritists and other servants of darkness have entered into an evil
covenant to pray to Satan for the breakdown of marriages of pastors
and Christian leaders. The spiritual warfare has intensified.
Pastors Have More Influence on Others
The fourth reason why pastors need intercession more
than other Christians is that by the very nature of their ministry
they have more influence on others.
Pastors Have More Visibility
Because pastors are up front, they are constantly
subject to gossip and criticism.
the book, Wagner elaborates more thoroughly on each reason. Elsewhere
he says, "To the degree the intercessors pray, the leaders gain
protection against the fiery darts
of the wicked one, over and above the whole armor of God they are
responsible for using."
the excellent training resource, Becoming
a Prayer Warrior, Beth Alves offers a suggested daily guide to
praying for spiritual leaders, which Wagner summarised as follows:
with God (spiritual revelation, anointing, holiness).
with others (congregations, ministry staff, unsaved).
vision (wisdom and enlightenment, motives, guidance).
Soul, Body (health, appearance, attitudes, spiritual and physical
(temptation, deception, enemies).
(general, spouse, children).
are invited to print out this guide and slip it into your Bible
as a daily prayer reminder. Let us arise to the occasion of being watchman
in our part of the Vineyard ~ especially for the leaders the Lord has
sent to us.
