Principles of Effective Intercession

Whatever the situation God has a prayer strategy ready. There is a biblically inspired way to navigate the times.

Prayer is the greatest thing we can do - communicating with our Lord, being in touch with the highest authority - the authority who raised Jesus Christ from the dead! This is our unique assurance for today.

God has provided us with the tools to get the job done...

this is why we are here,

this is the time to learn proficiency with God's tools...

bullet

the most effective tools that exist: prayer, faith and love.

These tools are the essential weapons of our spiritual warfare - not the normal weapons of the world!

Intercession: interceding in prayer for others.
The privilege of being a participant in God's advocacy.

We don't want to bore God by only presenting prayer requests. This is where the Lord's prayer and the acronym ACTOY is helpful in bringing balance to our daily prayers:

Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Others, Yourself.

Intercession - a Process

Principles Biblical Authority Effects

We do not have to be perfect in order to pray or intercede. If this were to be the case, there wouldn't be any prayer! However like soldiers we do need time in spiritual boot camp with a teachable spirit. God looks on the heart not outward appearances. He is looking for a heart surrendered to Jesus and seeking His ways - not signs. Not perfect people, just as David was not perfect - but soft, malleable, teachable friends who can be positioned by God in his ways and purposes.

Repentance
The Blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin - past, present and future. Praise God!
Holiness is a fruit of relationship with God.
No Unforgiveness
As we pray the Lord's prayer: "as we forgive them", we ask the Lord: "Is there anyone I need to forgive"?
Brings us in HUMILITY to identification with Jesus on the Cross... forgiving others as he has forgiven us. Antidote to judgmentalism.
Reconciliation and Peace
The point of Jesus time on earth was to reconcile man to God. Christians need to be in the clear in this to effectively intercede for others.

In Touch through
Humility and Guidance

Fear of the Lord
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom".
"The Lord confides in those who fear him"
.
Fearing the Lord is more than reverence! It is a deep understanding of God that disciplines the soul. It's a depth of relationship that comes from a revelation of the basis of safety in knowing God. This fear of God separates the world out of our deepest affections and promotes God to his rightful place of singular majesty and worship.
It is from this base that God chooses to speak to us.
Grace
We were dead in our sins apart from grace - we have no rights before God.
We don't deserve anything at all from the Lord - anything we receive is an unmerited gift of God.
Authority & Obedience We are people under authority. It is not our opinions that count, but our obedience.
Blessing our Enemies We are set free from being judgmental and arrogant. We are not against people.

Ways of Intercession

Prayer Weapons
Spiritual
We can't afford to take it off. Don't ask God to stop the arrows coming when he wants us to pick up the shield we left on the ground!

Faith in Action
 keep on believing,
 keep on knocking,
 keep on overcoming!
- Becoming resolute in faith by agreeing with the Holy Spirit in our heart;
- Prayer to "move mountains" with Holy Spirit inspired tenacity;
- More than conquerors.
Suffering When involved in intercession we may be attacked through a point of vulnerability. This could, for example, be through a loved one who is not following the Lord.
Prayer for Leaders

How do we know when we
can rest in our prayers?

By Faith We choose to trust in God's word.
By Peace
Spiritual perception of the Holy Spirit's assurance.
We come to peace - we have entered into his rest at the heart of intercession.
By Joy Joy in our heart is the affirmation of the Holy Spirit.
By circumstances We give thanks for what we have seen God do.
