Things to do

The Acropolis and St Paul.

Before leaving your hotel, read up Acts chapter 17.

After browsing the Plaka (old Athens area), walk up the Acropolis hill and enjoy a coffe or meal at one of the many cafes in this beautiful historic area. Then find your way to the Arios Pagos, which is the large rock outcrop just to the west of the Parthenon. Here you will find a stunning view of Athens.

The Parthenon was built between 447 and 432 BC in the times of Socrates and Plato. It represents the birth place of democracy under Solon, who overturned the severe laws of Draco ("Draconian"), abolished the death sentence for everything except murder - and introduced free elections for all classes except slaves.

The Areopagus, just below the entrance to the Parthenon, was the first court where homicide was tried, and also the place where St Paul preached to the Athenians in 54 AD. The main thrust of this message is recorded in Acts 17:16-34.

Enjoy the moment and meditate on the impact of Paul taking the Christian message to Europe, preaching this message to the people of Athens at the foot of the birth place of democracy.

Greek Islands
If you would like a wonderful day trip, there are a number of cruises which pick you up at your hotel at 0700 and return about 2000 same day.  They usually take in three islands, including Hydra.  The brochure price is around 18,000 dracma including lunch... but for airline staff discount try Alfred Tours, phone: 360-3002 for a price around 11,000 Ddracma.
